Abstract

Introduction: Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome that needs to be detected early.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia (SARC) in physically active and inactive older adults using two different methods: the SARC-CalF – which uses calf circumference – and the SARC-F.

Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional study with a convenience sample, consisting of 109 older adults, divided into two groups: physically active (GAF, n=64) and physically inactive (GIF, n=45). In addition to the screening instruments, sarcopenia was assessed using the protocol of the European Group on Sarcopenia in the Elderly (EGOWSOP).

Results: Both groups showed higher means (0.35 and 0.57) in relation to SARC-CalF. There was a significant difference in the GAF group between the SARC-CalF and the gold standard method (p=0.0096). The GIF group showed a difference between SARC-CalF and gold standard (p=0.0009) and SARC-CalF and SARC-F (p<0.0001). There was no significant difference in the intergroup analysis related to the methods used (p>0.05).

Conclusion: SARC-CalF is more efficient when evaluated in a physically active elderly population, whereas for greater precision in both groups, the SARC-F obtained a better result.
