Abstract

Introduction: Stretching has been commonly used to increase joint range of motion and muscle strength. Some evidence shows that stretching can have deleterious effects on muscle strength performance. However, some studies elucidate that stretching, when applied to antagonist muscles, can increase the strength performance of agonists.

Objective: To investigate the acute effects of different static stretching (SS) volumes of antagonist muscles, between sets, on the total volume of repetitions in the seated open rowing exercise, in trained men.

Methods: A total of 10 volunteers participated and were selected for convenience. Six visits were conducted with intervals of 48-hour intervals in between. Entry into the experimental protocols, before performing the open seated row, was randomized and performed over four days; 1) Traditional method group (GTRAD) – no previous stretching; 2) SS lasting 20s (G20); 3) SS lasting 40s (G40) and 4) SS lasting 60s (G60).

Results: There were no significant differences between the SS methods applied on the total volume of replicates (p=0.257; F=1.476).

Conclusion: The use of static stretching exercises of antagonist muscles, between sets, regardless of volume, does not seem to promote deleterious effects on the strength performance of agonist muscles. Therefore, based on these findings, it is speculated that this may be a good strategy to be used when the objective is to train strength and flexibility in the same training session, without deleterious effects on muscle strength performance and additional spending of session time.
