Abstract

Introduction: Knowing how skin sensitivity, plantar pressure, and stability change in response to running exercise can help trainers and physical therapists better plan post-exercise recovery. The practical application of this knowledge involves not only athletes in training, but also in rehabilitation processes.

Objective: To examine the acute effects of a 5 km run on plantar sensitivity, pressure and postural control in amateur cross-country runners.

Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study involving 11 runners (male, with averages: age 35±15 years; height 1.75±0.05m and body mass 77.70±8.70kg. The following were evaluated: plantar tactile sensitivity (esthesiometer), plantar pressure (baropodometer) and postural control (center of pressure during standing posture) before, immediately after, 15 min and 30 min a 5 km running session on a treadmill.

Results: There was a significant increase in the tactile sensitivity of the midfoot, in the mean plantar pressure and in the contact area in the forefoot region, with effects that lasted for up to 15 min after the end of the exercise. Postural control measures indicated greater body sway, especially in the anteroposterior direction up to 30 minutes after exercise.

Conclusion: The choice of exercises after a running session should consider the acute negative effect on the ability of postural control in runners, resulting from a shift of body weight forward, increasing the pressure demand on the midfoot and forefoot and requiring greater recruitment of the triceps surae to maintain stability control.
