Abstract

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome (MS) increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and there are non-pharmacological measures that contribute to preventing the increase of these risks, including combined training (CT).

Objective: To analyze the effect of twelve weeks of CT on MS components in young women.

Methods: This was an observational, retrospective and quantitative cohort study in a female sample selected by convenience. Secondary data from a preventive medicine clinic were used. The 12-week CT protocol consisted of resistance training, with the Bi-Set bodybuilding method, and aerobic training. Evaluations were conducted regarding biochemical parameters, body composition variables and hemodynamic components of blood pressure. Statistical analysis was performed using the One-Way ANOVA – paired, followed by Tukey's post-test, p≤ 0.05.

Results: A total of 41 women participated in the study, with a mean age of 37.5±10.6 years. An improvement was observed in the MS components, comparing the pre-intervention moment of 12 weeks of CT with the post-intervention, with a statistically significant reduction (p=0.001) in the following indicators: Body Mass Index, waist/hip ratio, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. For the biochemical parameters for MS, fasting glucose showed a statistically significant reduction between the pre-intervention moments versus 12 weeks of intervention (p=0.001). Triglycerides were also significantly reduced between the pre-intervention time versus 12 weeks of intervention (p=0.0001). High-density lipoprotein cholesterol, on the other hand, had a statistically significant increase from the pre-intervention time when compared to 12 weeks of intervention (p=0.0001).

Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that at 12 weeks, CT improved components for MS in young women.
