Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common type among women, with a high incidence after the age of 50. Factors such as smoking, obesity, and genetic predisposition influence its development. Although advances in screening and treatment have increased cure rates, the adverse physical and psychological effects of treatments still significantly compromise the quality of life of patients.

Objective: To investigate the effects of resistance training (RT) alone or in combination with aerobic training in women breast cancer survivors.

Methods: This is an integrative review with a qualitative approach, of a descriptive, exploratory and opinionated nature of the literature. The electronic collections CAPES Journals, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Pub Med were consulted to search for intervention studies that related resistance/aerobic training with women survivors of breast cancer, published between 2012 and 2023, with an age range of 40 to 80 years and written in Portuguese or English.

Results and Discussion: RT, alone or combined with aerobic training, is effective in improving several aspects in women breast cancer survivors, including muscle strength, fatigue reduction, quality of life, and psychosocial aspects.

Conclusion: The RT is safe and flexible, allowing the combination of exercises to meet individual preferences and limitations, addressing physiological domains not targeted by other exercises.
