Abstract
Introduction: The assessment of quality of life (QoL) is an evaluation that involves individual perception of distinct aspects of life, including physical, psychological, and functional dimensions.
Objective: To examine the correlation of physical activity level (PAL), time dedicated to physical activity (TDPA) and time dedicated to vigorous activity (TDVA) weekly with QoL in students and staff (administrative and faculty) of a Higher Education Institution (HEI).
Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study, with a populational sample from 2.680, which consisted of 336 participants of both sexes (295 students and 41 employees). Participants completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36). Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho=ρ) was used to estimate the linear correlation between PAL, TDPA e TDVA com QV.
Results: Most participants were active or very physically active (women: 58.4% and men: 64.5%). There were low to moderate correlations between PAL and QoL dimensions (ρ=0.029–0.568). Among employees, PAL, TDPA and TDVA showed significant weak and moderate correlations (P<0.05) with functional capacity. Among the students, PAL showed a very weak significant correlation with all dimensions, except for general health status, with which the correlation was weak (ρ=0.317; P=0.008). There were different correlations according to the area of the undergraduate courses.
Conclusion: PAL and TDVA showed direct and moderate correlations with the functional capacity dimension of QoL in employees, but not in students. The other dimensions of the SF-36 were poorly explained by the PAL categories, thus exhibiting a limited predictive power.
