Abstract

Introduction: Introduction: Practitioners at all levels have been looking for effective and efficient strategies to optimize Strength training (ST). In this context, static stretching in antagonistic muscles such as warm-up seems to provide improvements in strength performance in agonist muscles.

Objective: To evaluate the acute effect on strength performance in the leg extension in response to the static stretching of the antagonistic muscles (hamstrings).

Methods: An experimental study, with a convenience sample with 14 men with experience in ST. Test and retest of 10 repetitions maximum (RM) were applied. Before ST, two protocols were performed with an interval of 48-72h, during the warmup, two different protocols were applied: a) traditional without stretching (TR) or b) with static stretching of the hamstrings (SSH), antagonists to the quadriceps muscles.

Results: No significant differences were found in the total workout volume (TWV) between the TR (1727.86±697.05Kg) and SSH (1782.14±719.21Kg) protocols. In the TR protocol, significant differences were found in the number of repetitions in the 1st (9.93±0.27; p=0.001) and 2nd (9.21±0.97; p=0.030) sets in relation to the number of repetitions of 3rd set (8.21±1.25). In the SSH protocol, significant differences were found in the number of repetitions in the 1st (10.14±0.36) set in relation to the number of repetitions in the 2nd (9.14±1.10; p=0.010) and 3rd (8,86±1.41; p=0.012) sets.

Conclusion: In conclusion, performing 40s of static stretching on the hamstrings does not seem to impair on muscle performance in the leg extension.
